Charlton Athletic manager that Conor Washington is closing in on a return to first-team action for the club.

The Addicks have endured something of an attacking injury crisis in recent crisis, with Washington, Jayden Stockley, Chuks Aneke and Corey Blackett-Taylor have all been absent in recent weeks.

Stockley made his return from a back injury in last week’s defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, and it now seems that Washington is not far away from featuring either.

Providing an update on his attacking options ahead of a clash with promotion chasing Sunderland on Saturday, Jackson was quoted by South London Press as saying: “Conor is definitely getting closer to fitness.

“I would expect to have him back pretty soon. If he’s not available this weekend then hopefully he’ll get back training next week and have some involvement against Accrington.

“Chuks is a little bit further down the line. He’s progressing well but it is a bit more of a significant injury and is going to take a bit longer.”

Washington hasn’t featured for Charlton since the start of February due to a muscle problem, but has scored nine goals and provided two assists in 24 league games for the Addicks this season.

Charlton go into their clash with the Black Cats 16th in the League One table, eight points clear of the relegation zone, following a run of five straight defeats for Jackson’s side.

The Verdict

This certainly looks like being a welcome boost for Charlton over the next few weeks.

The Addicks have scored just twice in this five game losing run, and are without a goal in their last three, so having that extra attacking outlet in Washington should help to increase the Addicks attacking threat.

Indeed, with Washington closing in on a return, that could also give Jackson scope to rotate and rest his attacking options, which could help reduce the risk of further injuries.

As a result, you get the feeling that this can at least give Charlton something of a boost in morale heading into that game with Sunderland, as they look to get back to winning ways.
