'Checking on him' as Wales monitor Daniel James before Northern Ireland friendly

Wales will monitor Daniel James’ fitness before deciding on his involvement in Tuesday’s friendly against Northern Ireland, with Leeds United also managing the winger carefully.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, James is one of four Leeds players still in the Wales camp after Thursday’s World Cup play-off semi-final defeat to Bosnia on penalties. The 28-year-old scored from long range to make it 1-0, but he did not complete 90 minutes and later watched Brennan Johnson and Neco Williams miss in the shootout.

Despite exiting the play-offs, Wales must play twice during the international window and will host fellow semi-final losers Northern Ireland on Tuesday night. It is unclear whether Craig Bellamy will field a full-strength side or rotate.

Before Thursday, James had started only one game for Leeds since a hamstring tendon injury in November. With limited minutes and illness on arrival to camp, Bellamy signalled caution. He said James exceeded the planned workload, cramped up and had to come off, so staff are checking on him.

Leeds will be relieved by that approach after his injury-troubled season. James hopes another club start in the FA Cup at West Ham this weekend can kickstart his campaign.
