Ange Postecoglou was left to rue conceding a ‘really poor goal’ but said there were positive signs in our performance in a 1-0 loss at Chelsea in the Premier League on Thursday night.

Guglielmo Vicario produced one of the saves of the season to deny Jadon Sancho at the end of a goalless first half but there was little he could do to prevent Enzo Fernandez powering home a free header from six yards five minutes into the second half - the goal that proved decisive.

Moises Caicedo had a second goal for the home side ruled out for offside before it looked like we’d hit back in style when Pape Matar Sarr rifled home from 25 yards on 71 minutes, only for VAR to disallow the effort for a foul on Caicedo in the build-up.

There was one more clear sight of goal on 88 minutes when Brennan Johnson broke down the right and crossed for Heung-Min Son sprinting to meet it at the far post - Sonny got his effort on target from the left angle only for Robert Sanchez to scramble across his line to block.

Speaking to our Review Show from Stamford Bridge, Ange reflected: “It was a tough game, you always know it’s going to be a tough game here, but I thought it was tight. We had to fight hard to stay in the game, which I thought we did well, Vic made a great save, and I thought we defended well, but were also always a threat.

“We conceded a really poor goal, which was disappointing. That’s what’s costing us at the moment. I thought our response after that was excellent. We scored a good equaliser, then had a couple of chances to get something out of the game, but ultimately, we fell short.”

It’s a quick turn around as we face Southampton at home in the Premier League on Sunday (2pm UK). “There were some positive signs,” added Ange. “I don’t think it’s through a lack of effort, the players fought hard. We’ve got an opportunity on Sunday to improve our results.”
