Chelsea star Jorginho’s wage demands are an ‘issue’ but the midfielder ‘wants to stay’ at Stamford Bridge after opening discussions over a new contract, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Blues may have spent more than £250million during the summer transfer window, but there could be more incomings and outgoings at the turn of the year.

What’s the latest news involving Jorginho?

Jorginho has been on Chelsea’s books since completing a switch worth up to £57million from Italian giants Napoli four years ago, but there are doubts over his long-term future.

That is because the 30-year-old will enter the final six months of his £110,000-per-week contract in January.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are looking to agree fresh terms with Jorginho and have tabled a new deal.

However, the report suggests the west Londoners’ initial proposal did not meet the 46-cap Italy international’s demands and he is seeking a contract which would see him pocket £150,000-per-week.

It is understood that Jorginho has worked his way onto Barcelona’s radar and the La Liga giants are considering a move as they are searching for a Sergio Busquets replacement.

What has Simon Phillips said about Jorginho?

Phillips believes Jorginho is more likely to sign a new contract than N’Golo Kante, whose £290,000-per-week deal is set to expire next summer.

The journalist understands the Blues want to reach an agreement with the former Hellas Verona man and he is also keen to extend his stay in the capital as long as his salary expectations are met.

Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “Due to Kante’s injuries, I actually think Jorginho is more likely to stay right now.

“Chelsea love his leadership and his experience, and he wants to stay. It’s just the issue of wage demands.”

Should Chelsea meet Jorginho’s wage demands?

Jorginho has won five pieces of silverware since linking up with Chelsea and there is no doubt that he is still a key man for the west Londoners.

Graham Potter was appointed as the Blues’ head coach last month and Jorginho has remained a regular starter despite the alteration in the dugout.

With fellow central midfielder Kante refusing to put pen-to-paper, it is even more important for Chelsea to reach an agreement with Jorginho as they will not want to see two key men in the same area of the pitch depart without an incoming fee.

Jorginho has also bagged vital goals since the season got underway – including against Everton and Manchester United – so tying him down to a new contract should be a priority at Stamford Bridge.
