Chelsea have agreed a cut-price deal with Aston Villa for Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who is expected to travel to London to finalise the move and bolster Xabi Alonso's defensive options.

The Athletic reports a £7.5 million fee, with the 33-year-old set to sign a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge and an option for an additional 12 months.

Uncertainty over Martinez's future followed the collapse of a proposed transfer to Juventus earlier in August, after which his representatives offered him to Chelsea as they sought a solution.

Chelsea's pursuit was accelerated by Robert Sanchez's inconsistent display in the Premier League opener. Despite victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage, two errors nearly cost the points, prompting questions over a potential change in goal before the window shut.

Villa had already prepared for his exit by signing Zion Suzuki from Parma as their new number one. Martinez had been training alone at Bodymoor Heath while talks progressed.

His departure ends a successful spell after joining from Arsenal in September 2020. He made 256 appearances and was influential last term as Unai Emery's side finished fourth to secure Champions League football and won the Europa League.
