Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that a deal has been agreed with Chelsea for the transfer of Jamie Gittens.

The 20-year-old will become the Blues’ fifth signing of the summer, after Joao Pedro’s transfer was confirmed earlier in the week. He will team up with England Under-21 teammate Liam Delap who also joined Chelsea last month.

Both teams are currently playing in the FIFA Club World Cup. Talks were held in the United States to arrange the deal. The player will cost Chelsea £48.5 million with a further £3.5 million in potential add-ons.

Gittens came through the youth ranks at Manchester City before joining Dortmund in 2020. Since moving to Germany, the winger has played 107 matches, scoring 17 goals and providing 14 assists. Last season he scored 12 goals and recorded five assists across all competitions.

He will be Chelsea’s fifth first team player that came through Man City’s academy, joining Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, Tosin Adarabioyo and Liam Delap. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca also worked with City’s academy, managing the Under-23 side between 2020 and 2021.

Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl revealed: “The talks with Chelsea were challenging, but ultimately we are pleased that we can most likely realise our financial ambitions and then have planning security.

“Jamie is an outstanding player who has given us a great deal of pleasure. He now wants to take the next step in his career at Chelsea, and we wish him all the best and much success.”

Pedro will be eligible to make his debut for Chelsea in their Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras. However, the Blues will not be able to register Gittens for the competition. The Englishman has already made an appearance in the tournament for Dortmund.

Estevao Willian is an incoming Chelsea player that will be on the pitch in their quarter-final, although not for Maresca’s side. The 18-year-old Brazilian will leave Palmeiras for Chelsea after the tournament.

With Gittens’ arrival confirmed, it also increases the likelihood of Noni Madueke departing this summer. The winger has already been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge. Rivals Arsenal are amongst the clubs that are rumoured to be interested in the attacker.
