Chelsea have confirmed Alejandro Garnacho’s shirt number as the Argentine prepares to embark on the latest chapter of his young career.
The forward signed for the Blues in a £40million deal from Premier League rivals Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
He adds strength in depth to Enzo Maresca’s forward line, joining the likes of fellow new recruits Jamie Gittens and Estevao in the hunt for a starting berth out wide.
The winger, 21, was included in the Blues’ Champions League squad on Wednesday, and could be in line to make his debut when Chelsea take on Brentford after the international break.
The number that Garnacho will don will be a familiar one to him, as he will wear No49.
That was the number he took at United, before moving to 17 in his final two years at the club.
Chelsea’s No17 jersey was occupied by Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos.
Only four players have worn the No49 shirt before Garnacho. Richard Olise wore it last season, with Jimi Tauriainen before him.
Scott Sinclair and John Swift wore it in the 2006-07 and 2013-14 seasons respectively.
