Chelsea and Burnley issue joint condemnation after Fofana and Mejbri targeted
Hannibal Mejbri and Wesley Fofana spoke out after receiving racist messages online following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.
Tunisia midfielder Hannibal Mejbri & Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana were targets of racist abuse on social media after Premier League match between Chelsea & Burnley which ended 1-1.
Both players shared screenshots of racist messages sent to them via private messages on Instagram after the game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Fofana who was sent off during the match, expressed his frustration in a post on Instagram. He said that nothing had changed in 2026 adding that the problem continues because people often escape punishment.
He also criticized anti-racism campaigns saying that strong messages exist but real action is still missing.
Mejbri shared similar message stating that such people still exist in society in 2026. The Burnley midfielder called on everyone to educate themselves and others to help stop this behavior.
Chelsea reacted quickly with official statement condemning the abuse directed at Fofana. The London club described the messages as unacceptable and against the values of football and the club itself.
Chelsea confirmed full support for Fofana and all players who face racist abuse. The club also said it will work closely with authorities to identify those responsible and push for the strongest possible punishment.
Burnley also released statement, strongly condemning the abuse aimed at Mejbri. The club stressed that there is no place for racism in football or society.
