With the season over and the Club World Cup less than a fortnight away, things are moving very quickly at Chelsea in terms of transfers.

The Blues have already secured Liam Delap up front, and appear to be moving in hard on Jamie Gittens as a left winger and Mike Maignan in goal.

That leaves just one of the priority positions they are expected to fill this summer without an obvious deal progressing – centre back.

It was actually the first area that the sporting directors looked to address, as they put a bid in for Dean Huijsen immediately after the season ended. But he’s chosen Real Madrid, and since then it’s been rumour more than anything concrete in defence.

That could change soon. CaughtOffside have an exclusive today which claims that Bayern Munich centre back Kim Min-Jae could be allowed to leave this summer, and that Chelsea (along with Liverpool and Newcastle) are among the Premier League teams interested in him.

Bayern’s previously unattractive asking price of €50m has apparently dropped to €35m, and that seems to have worked in terms of attracting teams.

Kim not a natural signing for Chelsea sporting directors – but possible

Kim has not shone at Bayern in the same way he did at Napoli before – hence their willingness to sell. He’s also 28, which shows how much of a reach this deal would be for our sporting directors.

But if his price does come down low enough, we can see an experienced and tall defender being tempting even though it contradicts some of their usual patterns.

When you think how much we spent on players like Axel Disasi, €35m for Kim looks good value by comparison.
