In a recent report, journalist Mark Brus mentioned that Chelsea are locked in a three-way battle for Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande this summer. It has been claimed that the Blues would have to compete with Leeds United and Arsenal in the race to sign the Ivory Coast centre-back later this year.

Diomande’s Impressive Form In Portuguese Football

The 22-year-old enjoyed a good run of form at the Portuguese club in the previous campaign when he put in a string of solid displays at the centre of Sporting’s defence. Diomande featured in 31 matches for the Portuguese club in the previous campaign, scoring one goal and grabbing one assist across various competitions.

The Ivory Coast sensation is currently among the most talented centre-backs in Liga Portugal. Thus, it is no surprise that the Blues are keen on recruiting him in this transfer window.

Diomande’s current contract at Sporting will run out in the summer of 2030, so Chelsea would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about signing him later this year.

Should Chelsea Boss Xabi Alonso Get Diomande On Board?

Diomande is a good tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and can use his strong 1.90m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air.

The Ivory Coast defensive ace is also proficient at playing his way out from the back. However, there are some concerns over whether he can adapt to the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League if the Blues manage to lure him to Stamford Bridge in this summer transfer period.

We can expect Diomande to add more bite and steel to Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso’s defensive department. He has what it takes to compete for a regular first-team spot at the West London club in the coming years.

At 22, Diomande has got a promising future ahead and could be a real asset in Chelsea’s match-day squad next season. Therefore, Alonso should focus on going all out to get him on board before the end of this transfer window.
