Interim boss facing toughest of tests in first match after Enzo Maresca departure

Chelsea’s caretaker head coach Calum McFarlane says Chelsea’s owners and sporting directors have given him and his coaching staff “everything we need” ahead of Sunday’s mammoth task away to Manchester City.

McFarlane is Chelsea’s under-21 head coach but was informed by the club’s hierarchy on Thursday lunchtime that he was in charge for Sunday’s away game at the Etihad, following the departure of Enzo Maresca as first-team head coach.

He has said he is due to meet with the club’s medical staff before picking a team to face City.

Chelsea are looking to quickly instate a replacement head coach, with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior the leading candidate.

But McFarlane and his under-21 coaching staff are preparing to take the City game, in the meantime, and the Englishman has praised the club’s owners for their support ahead of facing the side second in the Premier League table.

“The brief is to prepare the lads for Manchester City on Sunday, and right now that's all I know,” he said, when asked whether he might be in charge of more games than just the City match.

“I spoke to the directors and the owners,” McFarlane added. “They’ve been really supportive and given us everything we need to do to be successful.

McFarlane was asked how difficult it will be to choose the right team to come up against Pep Guardiola’s men.

“It's difficult to pick any team at any moment,” he said. “It's probably the hardest part of the job even on the under-21s level.

“You're going to disappoint people, you're going to leave people out, but you've got to do what feels best in that moment. We'll obviously be speaking to the medical team. Obviously, coming back from injuries we have to manage like you do at any club at any level.

“It's all pretty routine in that but we'll pick the best team that we feel like is ready to play that game and compete.”
