Chelsea confirm Liam Delap shirt number for next season | OneFootball

Chelsea have confirmed that Liam Delap will wear the number nine shirt for the club after completing his move to West London from Ipswich Town.

The Blues have signed the striker in a £30m deal, after activating the relegation release clause in Delap’s contract at Portman Road. The England u-21 international scored 12 league goals despite Ipswich’s tough season and will provide competition for Nicolas Jackson at Stamford Bridge.

Delap’s shirt number has now been confirmed, with the 22-year-old set to wear the number nine. It’s a shirt with a patchy recent history at Chelsea, with several high-profile signings having failed to live up to expectations while wearing the number.

The likes of Mateja Kezman, Hernan Crespo, Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao, Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, and Romelu Lukaku all took the shirt after arriving in West London, but struggled to produce consistent performances.

Delap determined to win trophies at Chelsea

Delap will be hoping he can buck that trend, after reuniting with former Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca in the capital. He has already set his sights on winning trophies at Chelsea.

“Growing up watching this club, I understand the stature of it and how incredible it has been over the years,” Delap told the club’s official website.

“I wanted to come here to win trophies. When I spoke to the club, everyone wanted to get back to the very top, and they have the quality and the players to do that. The hunger and desire to keep adding trophies, to take the club back to where it belongs, that is the main objective.”
