Chelsea are weighing up a move for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, according to a report from The Athletic.
Enzo Maresca’s side are searching for extra attacking quality to strengthen the squad.
The London club have begun the season well, collecting four points from their first two Premier League matches.
Their aim is to build on the confidence of winning the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this summer.
The Blues have been linked with RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons recently, and Lopez has now appeared on their radar.
Chelsea’s interest is focused on adding midfield creativity, particularly if any departures occur in the coming weeks.
However, the Premier League side have opened talks with the player’s representatives to understand the possibility of a transfer.
Barcelona’s current depth in attacking roles could make a deal possible, though it depends on the club’s willingness to negotiate.
The Spaniard signed a new Barcelona contract in October 2024, extending his stay at Camp Nou until 2029.
The fresh deal added two more years to his previous terms, underlining the club’s long-term plans for the midfielder.
The 22-year-old missed the early part of the 2024-25 season after suffering a thigh injury that sidelined him for over a month.
Despite that setback, he played 46 matches across all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists.
Most of his appearances came from the bench as he competed for minutes in a packed squad.
Lopez joined Barcelona’s academy from Real Betis when he was 12 years old.
He gained senior experience during a loan spell with Linares in the 2022-23 season before returning to break into Barcelona’s first team under Xavi.
During that breakthrough year, he scored 11 goals in 43 appearances, earning recognition as one of the club’s emerging talents.
Chelsea remain attentive to his situation but have not made a formal move.
Any progress will likely depend on possible exits and Barcelona’s position in the next few weeks.
