Chelsea have been linked with Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, but face competition from several clubs including Manchester United.
Chelsea have now taken an initial step towards signing him, contacting his representatives over a possible move this summer, according to Sky Sports ch.
Rogers signed a new contract in November, but Aston Villa are reportedly ready to sell the England international. They have placed a £90 million valuation on him.
Rogers is enjoying a brilliant season, registering 10 goals and seven assists across all competitions, the most of any Villa player.
Chelsea’s season have gone pear-shaped and they are ready to prevent a repeat next term by targeting Premier League-proven players such as Rogers.
Uncertainty surrounding the future of vice-captain Enzo Fernandez also strengthens the case to make a move for the PFA Young Player of the Year holder.
Rogers operates mainly as an attacking midfielder, and can also be deployed anywhere across the frontline.
Chelsea could miss out on Rogers if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. The midfielder is believed to favour a move to a club playing in the competition.
The Blues trail fifth-placed Liverpool by four points with six games remaining, leaving their qualification hopes in the balance.
United could now be well-placed to sign the Villa midfielder, as they look poised to secure qualification for Europe’s elite club competition.
Rogers has already held talks with the Red Devils and is open to joining them.
However, the 23-year-old is yet to make a decision on his future, giving Chelsea and other suitors hope of still securing his signature.
