Chelsea deleted a social media post and faced backlash after highlighting Enzo Fernández’s equaliser as Argentina beat England 2-1 to reach the World Cup final.
According to Glorioso 1904, the Blues shared a photo of the Argentine celebrating, captioned only with a fireworks emoji, then removed it following a negative reaction from supporters.
The image appeared shortly after the former Benfica midfielder struck from outside the box to level the match, a goal that helped Argentina progress. Many Chelsea fans questioned why the club marked a strike scored against England, who were then eliminated.
After the criticism, Chelsea took the post down across all digital platforms and refrained from further comment on the game’s outcome.
Argentina will meet Spain, featuring Alejandro Grimaldo, in the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday 19 at 20:00, after Spain eliminated France on Tuesday.
