Chelsea do something against Napoli for just the third time this season – they need it to win CL

Chelsea went 1-0 up then 2-1 down against Napoli in the Champions League last night, and playing at a tricky stadium where not many teams win at all, most fans probably thought it was curtains.

But instead, the Blues roared back with two Joao Pedro goals and won it 3-2.

Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph made an interesting observation about that.

Chelsea improve comeback record with significant win

“I think Chelsea had only won twice after falling behind this season (West Ham and Lincoln) before last night,” Law wrote on Twitter.

“So to do so in Naples, against a Napoli team unbeaten at home (regardless of injuries), should be viewed as a positive step for the squad and for Liam Rosenior.”

We hadn’t known that stat before, but we could just sense it. There was a sense of hopelessness when we were 2-1 down which obviously stems from the fact that turning games around has become a relative rarity for us with this new look young team.

Doing it in the cup against a lower league Lincoln, or against a rotten West Ham team earlier in the year is on a whole different level to doing it in a crucial moment in the Champions League.

If we want to win this competition we’re likely to have to do it again at some point, so this is no small matter.

Liam Rosenior was asked about which teams his side could face in the next round, and he gave a typically diplomatic answer pointing out that all our potential opposition will be tough.

Speaking to the media at full time, Rosenior revealed what he had done tactically at half time to adjust his team and help them earn a vital 3-2 win away from home.
