The Eagles were very much in the game during the first half, but sloppiness cost them in devastating fashion.

Estevao was given a huge helping hand by Jaydee Canvot, who inexplicably passed back from inside the Chelsea half without looking at what was behind him.

Had he been aware, he would have seen Estevao up against only Tyrick Mitchell. Canvot’s pass was poor, and the Brazilian latched straight onto it before driving through on goal, into the Palace box, and smashing past Dean Henderson.

The winger has had a quiet few weeks and had been on a run of 10 games without a goal, but he was dangerous throughout here.

He also registered a brilliant assist for Chelsea’s second, flicking a ball over the top for Joao Pedro who ran into the box, cut inside Adam Wharton and calmly finished past Henderson.

The game was put beyond doubt after Enzo Fernandez converted a penalty in the 64th minute following a handball from Canvot, who blocked Joao Pedro’s shot on goal.

It seemed the afternoon could not get any worse for the home side, but it duly did when Wharton received two yellow cards in the space of six minutes and was sent off, his second and more costly offence a lunging tackle Moises Caicedo.

There was some reprieve for Palace, who got themselves on the scoresheet in the 88th minute courtesy of a Chris Richards header from a corner following a scramble in the box. But at that point the result was beyond question.
