Enzo Maresca says Chelsea will learn from their opening Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
Chelsea, who are back in the Champions League for the first time in two years, were beaten 3-1 by Bayern on Wednesday night at the Allianz Arena.
Five of Chelsea’s starting XI were making their Champions League debut and they were punished by a ruthless and experienced Bayern side.
England captain Harry Kane struck twice, with an own goal by defender Trevoh Chalobah also helping Bayern on their way.
“I think we can learn a lot from this game,” said Maresca.
“First of all, this kind of game requires [you] to play in the right way for 95 minutes - not just for part of the game.
“I think we did that for part of the game very well, but in some moments, we were not good enough. We can learn many things.
“The Champions League is this kind of game, especially against Bayern, that is one of the favourites. But, I think overall we competed quite well.
“I think the performance was quite good. We started very well for the first 20 minutes, creating two or three clear chances.
“Then we concede a goal, that we can avoid, and the game changed a little bit.”
Chelsea impressed at times and got on the scoresheet through Cole Palmer, who marked his 100th appearance for the club in style.
Palmer expertly finished off a slick counter to make it 2-1 before half time, but an error from Malo Gusto allowed Kane to kill the game after the break.
“We started well, I think we had early chances to score,” said Palmer. “But when you make mistakes at the highest level, it is always difficult to comeback in any game.
“Maybe there is a bit of a lack of concentration and not managing the moments correct. But I feel we have shown we can play against one of the best teams in the competition. I think we deserved more, to be honest.
“It’s a good learning curve for tonight, and to be back in the competition is nice. We just need to kick on from here.”
Maresca was frustrated by the build-up to Palmer’s goal, which saw Chelsea striker Joao Pedro caught by Bayern defender Jonathan Tah.
The referee showed Tah, who was taken off at half time, a yellow card - but Maresca believes he should have been sent off.
“I think in that action the decision from the referee has been quite tough because, for me personally, it’s more a red card than a yellow card when there is not intention to go for the ball,” said Maresca.
“But, even with that, we start the second half creating chances, starting the right way. Then after we concede the third goal, the game changes again.”
