Chelsea have been hit with a new blow after Jamie Gittens suffered another injury in training.

The English winger had only just returned to fitness over the recent international break but sustained a fresh hamstring issue at Cobham on Friday, Blues head coach Liam Rosenior has revealed.

The new problem explained why Gittens was not part of Chelsea’s matchday squad for Saturday evening’s 7-0 FA Cup thrashing of League One strugglers Port Vale, which saw them ease into the semi-finals at Wembley.

Gittens has made just 12 total starts for Chelsea during his stop-start first season at the club, appearing 27 times overall across all competitions.

Hamstring injuries and a brief illness which swept through the camp early in Rosenior’s reign have prevented the 21-year-old from featuring more often.

He joined Chelsea in July from Borussia Dortmund for an initial fee of £48.5million, plus a potential £3.5m in add-ons.

Speaking about Gittens’ situation after the Port Vale game, Rosenior said: “Unfortunately, Jamie, in training yesterday, picked up what looks like a hamstring injury again.

“We have to scan him and make sure. It's a real shame for him.”

Rosenior continued: “I think it's the third time it's happened. We need to help him and we need to make sure he's okay. I can't give you a time frame on that at the moment.”
