The football season is not over – but it seems silly season has already begun.
Football Espana are today reporting on a story from Spain which is linking Chelsea with a very unlikely target – Ansu Fati.
Once the Lamine Yamal before Lamine Yamal, a series of injuries have ruined a promising career, and he’s spent a couple of years bouncing around on loan and riding the bench at the Nou Camp. His star has fallen desperately low compared to where it once was, and he needs a reboot. Barca would love to sell him, but they couldn’t find a taker last summer, and this year probably isn’t much more promising.
The fact that Fati didn’t get on the pitch in either of Barcelona’s two dead rubber La Liga games post-title win shows you just what his status is now.
The report they cite in Spain says that Monaco are interested, but the French side are aiming for a loan, while Barca want a sale.

Chelsea’s interest sounds a little unlikely simply because they’re well stocked in attacking positions. Even if they manage to sell Christopher Nkunku, they’ve got so many other players already in the squad and two more arriving in the form of Estevao Willian and Geovany Quenda over the next two summers.
To us, these links look like they’re being confected by Barcelona or by Fati’s camp in an attempt to drum up some attention in their client for the summer. There’s also the Jorge Mendes angle – the super agent represents Fati, and could be calling in some favours here.
We’d say it’s extremely unlikely we hear about this rumour again – but when Mendes is involved, nothing is impossible.
