Chelsea, Liverpool considering January move for Barcelona defender – report | OneFootball

Jules Kounde has not had the best of starts to the 2026/27 at FC Barcelona, having slipped down the pecking order under Hansi Flick.

Indeed, the French international is no longer the preferred starter at right-back, with Eric Garcia taking over the slot.

The defender is also below the likes of Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, and Andreas Christensen when it comes to the centre-back position.

As such, Kounde has been restricted to only two starts this season, while he has only played 261 minutes across five matches in all competitions.

Chelsea, Liverpool eyeing Kounde

Given the situation, speculations about a possible departure in January have started to do the rounds.

Now, according to reports relayed by AS, Chelsea and Liverpool are considering the possibility of making a move for Kounde in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Indeed, both Premier League heavyweights are eyeing the French international and see the possibility of signing him as ‘highly likely’.

Liverpool are on the lookout for a new right-back with Jeremie Frimpong failing to impress Andoni Iraola so far in the new season, making Kounde a viable target.

As for Chelsea, the report states that the Blues’ new manager, Xabi Alonso, is an admirer of the 27-year-old Barça defender’s versatility.

Bayern Munich also in the scene

Meanwhile, as previously reported, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are also showing an interest in Kounde heading into the new year.

The Bavarian giants are understood to be prepared to cash in on Kim Min-jae to generate funds and make room for the Barcelona star.

Kounde, for his part, has shown no desire to leave the Blaugrana, where he has a long-term contract until 2030. But a continued lack of game-time could compel him to consider the possibility.

Moreover, recent reports suggest that Barcelona have revived their interest in Sporting CP right-back Ivan Fresneda, which could indicate a willingness from the club’s part to move on from Kounde if a significant offer arrives.

It remains to be seen how things evolve between now and January for Kounde and whether any of the aforementioned suitors decide to act on the reported interest.
