Chelsea want to bring in a centre-back this summer but are not expected to make a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Branthwaite is a player that Chelsea have tracked in recent months. The centre-back’s contract at Everton runs until 2027 and the Toffees have no intention of selling Branthwaite this summer.

Last summer, Everton turned down multiple bids from Manchester United for Branthwaite, the latter of which was in excess of £45m.

Branthwaite was named Everton’s Young Player of the Season in 2024/25, and also claimed the accolade and the club’s senior award last season. However, he has been overlooked for England for each of Thomas Tuchel’s first two camps.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited as admirers of the one-cap England international. However, journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that a Chelsea move for Branthwaite is unlikely at this time.

Chelsea favour Hato move over Branthwaite

Chelsea are instead assessing alternatives and there is interest in Ajax teenager Jorrel Hato. The 19-year-old was named Eredivisie Talent of the Year for 2024/25 after making 50 appearances in all competitions for Ajax.

Hato scored three times and laid on six assists, featuring primarily at left-back. His ability to play centrally and at full-back adds to his appeal for Chelsea.
