Chelsea have now won both of their first two matches of the season across all competitions under new boss Alonso, having outlasted rivals Fulham 3-2 in a thrilling west London derby on Monday to kick off the Premier League campaign.

Standard Sport’s Dom Smith was at Stamford Bridge to rate the Chelsea players’ performances against Luton.

Mike Penders 6

Given very little to do by Luton on his Chelsea debut.

Malo Gusto 7

Defensively assured when he was on and assisted Welbeck for Chelsea’s opening goal.

Josh Acheampong 7

Strong performance again from the young defender, who made some good tackles.

Estevao 7

Direct and forward-thinking but unfortunate that his second-half strike went down as an own goal.

Reece James 7

An important presence in the middle of the park and forced a good save from Josh Keeley in the first half.

Valentin Barco 7

Made a really assured debut in midfield, succeeding with a number of tackles including one that led to the second goal.

Pep Chavarria 6

Full of running down the left and a passing option whenever needed.

Star duo: Danny Welbeck and Morgan Rogers both impressed for Chelsea against Luton in the Carabao Cup

Morgan Rogers 8

A really positive presence again and was involved in a lot of Chelsea’s best football of the evening.

Cole Palmer 7

Bright again, hitting the crossbar, and given the captain’s armband when James went off.

Danny Welbeck 8

Perfect debut for the veteran. The 35-year-old headed home the opening goal to get off the mark for his new club.

Romeo Lavia (Rogers, 67’) 5

Slid in for one challenge that he badly missed. Did OK.

Pedro Neto (James, 67’) 6

Was a reliable and disciplined wing-back when he came on, winning the ball for his team.

Jorrel Hato (Gusto, 67’) 5

Barely noticeable when he came on, with Chelsea already home and hosed.

Joao Pedro (Welbeck, 73’) 5

Had little impact, as the game was already won. Denied by Keeley from close range.

Jamie Gittens (Estevao, 80’) 6

Unlucky to hit the post in stoppage time.
