Chelsea are about to sign an experienced England international player after spotting an excellent opportunity to get a deal done, according to a report today.

The Blues have acted fast in order to make the most of an ideal opportunity to bring in an experienced player at a bargain price.

I say a bargain price, by that I mean FREE!

According to a report from The BBC today, Chelsea are set to sign England international Lucy Bronze on a free transfer when her Barcelona contract ends.

The defending Women’s Super League champions are closing in on an agreement for a two-year deal, with an option to extend for a further year.

Bronze, 32, leaves Barcelona upon the expiry of her contract this month.

Definition of a smart signing

If you have a chance to sign such a quality and experienced player for free, then you absolutely must be looking to take it, and that is what Chelsea Women’s are doing here, and probably what the Men’s team should be looking to do too.

Different recruitment strategies for the Women and for the Men see the Men’s side mainly just buying young prospects building for the future, and ignore the importance of balance altogether. And also, the importance of proven and established players to bring into a squad.

Getting Bronze in, who has over 100 caps for England and bags of experience in Europe and in England, on a free transfer, is the definition of a smart signing.

She will come in and help right away and be a strong influence in the dressing room and help nurture the younger players in the squad.

I’d love to see the Men’s team looking to make such smart signings. Not all experience is good experience, but selective proven and established experience can be essential.
