Chelsea forward Joao Pedro says he is competing to win the Golden Boot this year, but his ultimate “dream” is to win the Ballon d’Or.
The Brazil international signed for the Blues this past summer, leaving Brighton in a £55 million that could rise to £60m with potential add-ons.
Pedro has gotten off to a lightning quick start at Stamford Bridge, scoring five goals in his first five starts. Only two players have enjoyed a better early record for the club in the Premier League era.
The 23-year-old was one of many forwards to secure a big money transfer in the summer, the biggest of which was Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool, while the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko all joined Premier League clubs from Europe.
“Big clubs from England have brought the top strikers from Europe this summer. It will be interesting to compete with them for the Golden Boot,” he told the Evening Standard.
Pedro is also hoping to be Brazil’s starting no.9 when the World Cup rolls around next summer, but the accolade he has put above all is the Ballon d’Or.
“It would be a dream one day to win the Ballon d’Or. I believe in myself. Everything is possible. Maybe it can happen.”
The former Watford attacker also believes that Chelsea have a “good chance” of potentially winning the Premier League title this season after starting the season with seven points from their opening three games.
“It’s too early to say whether we’re going to win it or not,” he says. “But if you watch us, you’ll say we have a good chance. I agree.”
