Enzo Maresca and Chelsea have received a significant blow to their personnel options for the away trip to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The London side are preparing for one of their most demanding fixtures of the season against Pep Guardiola’s title-chasing squad, and the absence of a key midfield figure will only heighten the challenge facing Maresca’s squad.

With Manchester City traditionally dominant on home soil, any enforced change to Chelsea’s strongest line-up is likely to be keenly felt. The Stamford Bridge midfield has been central to their tactical structure this season, particularly in matches against elite opposition where control and defensive discipline are at a premium.

Losing an ever-present presence in the centre of the pitch removes an important layer of protection ahead of the back line, while also limiting Enzo Maresca’s flexibility in shaping his midfield unit for the contest.

Now, following the midfielder’s fifth yellow card inside the opening 19 games of the ongoing season, Moises Caicedo will be suspended for Chelsea’s visit to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

The Ecuadorian midfielder picked up a booking inside the opening five minutes of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, forcing himself into a one-match ban.

As for Manchester City, they have three players currently on four bookings for the campaign, with Nico Gonzalez, Bernardo Silva, and Gianluigi Donnarumma all needing to avoid a fifth yellow card in Thursday night’s visit to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

Moises Caicedo’s absence will prompt Enzo Maresca to reshuffle his midfield options, potentially handing opportunities to players to step into a high-pressure environment against one of the league’s most formidable sides.

How Chelsea adapt tactically without their suspended midfielder may prove decisive in determining whether they can compete effectively at the Etihad Stadium.

From Manchester City’s perspective, Pep Guardiola will also be mindful of disciplinary risks ahead of a congested festive schedule, with several key players walking a suspension tightrope of their own.

Looking ahead, Manchester City will aim to capitalise on their opponents’ enforced absence as they continue their push at the top end of the Premier League table, standing just two points behind Arsenal heading into the final game-week of the calendar year.
