Blues’ young crop rewarded once more after winning league title
Chelsea’s Under 21’s captain Shumaira Mheuka has been named the Premier League 2’s player of the season.
Mheuka led the Blues’ academy side to the reserve league title, scoring 18 goals in 19 games.
He laid on one assist as Chelsea won 14 of their 20 matches, clinching the trophy after scoring 52 goals.
Mheuka, the 18-year-old forward, scored two hat-tricks during the campaign, against Manchester City in August last year and against Crystal Palace in January after the turn of the year.
Mheuka captained the side to the league title, and upon winning the award, he said: “It has been a great season for me and I’m very proud to receive this award.
“I’ve worked hard throughout the year and I’m grateful to my family, the staff and my team-mates for all of their support.”
He beat competition from Fulham’s Farhaan Ali-Wahid, Leicester’s Logan Briggs, Everton pair Braiden Graham and George Pickford, his Chelsea team-mate Harrison Murray-Campbell, Liverpool’s Kieran Morrison and Man City’s Kian Noble to the top prize.
Mheuka ended up as the top goalscorer in the Premier League 2, with Morrison is closest competitor for the Golden Boot with 14 goals.
Chelsea’s title win came down to the finest of margins, as they edged out Manchester United on goal difference.
Both sides lost their final games of the campaign - the Blues were beaten by Tottenham 3-1 at Kingsmeadow and United lost to Newcastle by the same scoreline - but it did not matter, with Chelsea’s goal difference 10 healthier than their rivals’.
