Chelsea signed young winger Geovany Quenda for £40 million a few months ago, but he will only complete a move to Stamford Bridge next summer.
The future Chelsea attacker has been showing that he could prove a terrific addition to the club’s frontline with some excellent showings in recent outings.
Quenda lined up for Sporting CP against Kairat Almaty in the Champions League opposite another young Chelsea starlet, Dastan Satpayev.
However, the ‘very talented’ Portuguese star stole the show, bagging a goal and an assist.
Quenda set up Alisson Santos’ goal after 67 minutes before weaving away from challenges and firing past Sherkhan Kalmurza in the Kairat goal to crown a terrific display.
The 18-year-old won four of his seven ground duels, completed three out of four dribbles, and two of his four crosses.
Quenda was fouled once and created a big chance. He has three assists in the Primeira Liga this season despite starting only once.
His outstanding form carried over into the international break, where he bagged a goal and an assist in two games.
Quenda’s arrival could spell doom for Pedro Neto. The Portuguese winger was once tipped to be a key piece in Chelsea’s rebuild, but his time with the club has been underwhelming.
His end product has been frustrating, with numerous promising opportunities wasted and few decisive contributions to show for it.
Dribbling, once his strongest attribute, has too often looked predictable and ineffective against Premier League full-backs.
With Quenda offering dynamism, directness and composure in the final third, Neto’s place in Chelsea’s long-term plans looks increasingly precarious.
