Chelsea are reportedly considering a move to bring former defender Antonio Rudiger back to Stamford Bridge, according to Marca,
Rudiger’s contract with Real Madrid expires next summer, and several clubs are interested in signing him on a free transfer.
The Blues are reportedly in contact with his representatives and have an excellent relationship with them. Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs are also circling.
Chelsea could use an experienced centre-half to bolster the backline. It is one area where they are currently lacking, and Levi Colwill’s absence exacerbates the issue.
Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo have been inconsistent, while Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile are too injury-prone and inconsistent.
Chelsea lack a commanding and authoritative presence at the back, and Rudiger ticks those boxes.
The club enjoyed success when they signed Thiago Silva on a free transfer, and will be looking to repeat the trick with Rudiger.
However, Rudiger is no longer the same defender who once marshalled Chelsea’s backline with such authority.
The German, who has been described as ‘a very complete defender’, is currently ruled out for three months.
He has struggled with persistent injuries over the past two seasons. These setbacks have clearly taken a toll on his athleticism and reliability.
His aggressive, front-foot defending remains admirable, but the sharpness and physical edge that once defined his game have faded.
Bringing him back to Stamford Bridge would be a sentimental move rather than a strategic one.
Given Chelsea’s recent struggles with injury-prone defenders, it would be a costly mistake.
The club should focus on signing Marc Guehi and Dayot Upamecano. They could anchor the defence for years to come and fit the long-term rebuild taking shape under Enzo Maresca.
