Chelsea target Henderson leaves Brentford | OneFootball

Chelsea have received a boost in their pursuit of Jordan Henderson, as Brentford confirm the midfielder has left the club.

The 36-year-old only joined the Bees last summer, but has now reached a mutual agreement for the termination of his contract.

The midfielder made 34 club appearances in all competitions last campaign, before joining Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at this summer’s World Cup. He made history as the first England player ever to feature at seven different major tournaments.

“I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me,” said Henderson. “And for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one.

“Coming back to the Premier League was really important to me, and Brentford gave me that chance. I’ll always be thankful for that.

“Brentford is a special football club. It’s ambitious, progressive and full of good people. From the owners and leadership, to the coaching staff, the players and everyone behind the scenes, it’s been a privilege to be part of it.

“Most of all, I’d like to thank the supporters. Their backing never changed, and the connection they have with the club is clear to see. They care deeply about Brentford and they support the team in the right way every step of the journey.”

Chelsea are believed to be closing in on deals for both Henderson and Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. Xabi Alonso is evidently keen to add some more experienced players to his young squad.

After Chelsea’s first match of pre-season, the Spanish coach commented that his side still need “proper balance”. The Blues have already broken their transfer record this window with the £117 million signing of Morgan Rogers, but are continuing to search for more reinforcements.
