Chelsea team news vs Wolves

Enzo Maresca is expected to make full use of his sizable squad when Chelsea head to Molineux to take on Wolves in a fourth-round EFL Cup tie on Wednesday night.

Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, and Enzo Fernandez have been nursing injuries and that trio are expected to sit out the trip to Wolves.

Filip Jorgensen is likely to replace Robert Sanchez in goal, while Malo Gusto should come back in defence following last week’s suspension against Sunderland.

Liam Delap has returned from injury and an EFL Cup tie should serve as a good opportunity for the striker to get back up to speed.

Romeo Lavia and Estevao are expected to start, but there will be no place for Levi Colwill, Cole Palmer, Benoit Badiashile, or Dario Essugo, who are all out injured.

Pressure builds on Maresca after Sunderland defeat

Chelsea slipped eight points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal when they were rocked in a 2-1 defeat by Sunderland at the weekend and there is a bit of pressure building on manager Maresca.

Last season’s Club World Cup success earned the Italian plenty of credit, but defeats to Manchester United, Brighton and Sunderland have started to erode some of the confidence in the 45-year-old.

The Blues have a huge squad, and Maresca is expected to make full use of his roster when the west Londoners head for Wolves, but after Saturday’s loss to the Black Cats, Chelsea can’t afford another sub-standard performance at Molineux.

Defeat to a Wolves side, who have failed to win any of their opening nine Premier League matches, would ramp up the pressure on Maresca and the Italian is expected to be guarded against a negative outcome on Wednesday night.

A win in midweek moves the Blues one step closer to a trophy, but their upcoming league schedule does get a little easier and they could soon be climbing the table.

They face Tottenham on Saturday before another clash with the Old Gold, before they then face Burnley at Turf Moor.

Towards the end of November, things do get a little trickier, though, as Chelsea face Arsenal, before ties against Leeds United, Bournemouth, Everton, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and another tie with the Cherries to wrap up the year.
