Chelsea Teammates Learn What Enzo Fernandez Told Club About Them Before Man City Exit | OneFootball

Enzo Fernandez was one of several Chelsea exits on deadline day earlier in September.

Enzo Fernandez felt no connection with his former Chelsea teammates before his transfer to Manchester City, according to reports.

The 25-year-old joined Manchester City on the summer transfer deadline day in a joint-British-record deal worth £125 million.

It is no secret that he pushed for the move, having considered leaving Chelsea for several months, his agent Javier Pastore confirmed. Additionally, the midfielder caused controversy by publicly expressing his desire to live in Madrid, Spain, amid links with Real Madrid, which led Chelsea to suspend him for two games.

Chelsea were aware of Fernandez’s wish to leave; hence the club’s previous August 14 deadline for £120m bids for the midfielder. The deadline passed with Chelsea receiving no offers, but we know the story did not end there.

Manchester City waited until the deadline before making their move, after securing Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders’ exits. However, Fernandez did not sit idle while his future remained uncertain ahead of deadline day.

Fernandez felt detached at Chelsea

According to The Telegraph, before reaching an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer, Chelsea received two written transfer requests from Fernandez himself.

Even more interestingly, Fernandez reportedly also told Chelsea that he felt he “no longer had a relationship with any of his Stamford Bridge teammates”.

This would be an eyebrow-raising statement from the then Chelsea vice-captain and influential dressing-room figure.

In early August, Fernandez’s former midfield partner, Moises Caicedo, still showed his support for the Argentina international and even said he wanted to keep playing together.

That said, The Telegraph highlighted the lack of good-luck messages that Fernandez received from his former Blues teammates, at least publicly.

Of course, it is almost impossible to confirm whether Fernandez’s relationship with his former Chelsea teammates was truly broken.

What is known for certain is that Fernandez lost Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso's trust in his final weeks at the club.

While Alonso initially insisted Fernandez showed a good attitude in training, he later left the midfielder out of his squad in two consecutive matches, against Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion. At the time, the Chelsea boss said he wanted players who showed a “desire to play” for the team. Fernandez’s omissions likely meant he was set on reuniting with Enzo Maresca at Manchester City.

Chelsea ended up winning both games, but Fernandez’s absence might have played a part in Caicedo’s rushed return, which resulted in his calf injury setback during the Brighton win.
