Chelsea are reportedly exploring a move for Georginio Wijnnaldum after a chaotic end to the summer transfer window, with head coach Xabi Alonso seeking midfield reinforcements.

According to Foot Mercato, the Blues have opened talks with the 35-year-old, who is a free agent after leaving Al-Ettifaq in the summer, so he can sign outside the window.

Deadline day unravelled for Chelsea as Enzo Fernandez joined Manchester City in a British record-equalling 125 million deal and late targets fell through. Monaco also aborted Lamine Camara's last-gasp switch to Stamford Bridge.

Wijnaldum scored 17 goals in 34 outings for Al-Ettifaq last season, but the Saudi club chose not to extend his contract. He has been without a club since and is weighing up his next move.

Alonso views the former Newcastle midfielder as a pragmatic option, with 217 Premier League appearances for Newcastle and Liverpool suggesting minimal adaptation time.

The Dutchman won the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup and Super Cup with Liverpool, before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain after rejecting a contract extension five years ago.
