It has been reported that Chelsea are set to recall former England U21 goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe from Bolton Wanderers.

Bolton Wanderers are experiencing a very busy January transfer window after what has been a woeful run of recent form and there is now expected to be further business for the Whites to deal with involving the recall of goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe.

Steven Schumacher oversaw a fairly major overhaul of the first-team squad at Bolton in the summer with 14 new signings brought in as well as the sanctioning of key departures.

Nathan Baxter, Ricardo Santos and Gethin Jones all departed on free transfers before the sale of captain George Thomason as well as Aaron Collins. Luke Southwood and Klaidi Lolos were also allowed to leave with Carlos Mendes Gomes and Szabolcs Schon leaving loan late on in the transfer window.

Just as it appeared as though Schumacher was beginning to find some real rhythm and fluency with his new look squad, Bolton have fallen off a cliff of late with a 1-0 defeat at home to Port Vale in the round of 16 of the EFL Trophy now making it just three wins in their last ten matches across all competitions, and all three of those victories coming in fortunate circumstances as they drift away from the top two in League One.

Sharman-Lowe was one of those 14 new additions, alongside fellow goalkeepers Tyler Miller and Nathan Broome, but the Chelsea academy graduate now looks set to depart the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Teddy Sharman-Lowe being recalled by Chelsea

According to BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella, via his X account, Chelsea are set to recall Teddy Sharman-Lowe from what was expected to be a season-long loan at Bolton Wanderers.

Kinsella has suggested Chelsea’s decision to recall the 22-year-old shot stopper, who represented England as they defended their UEFA U21 European Championship title last summer, is due to him having enjoyed a ‘successful’ spell with Trotters.

It has been reported that all options are on the table moving forward for Sharman-Lowe with the potential of him remaining within the Chelsea first-team squad also on the cards.

Sharman-Lowe was heavily criticised by many Bolton supporters for his poor start to the season with strong performances often undermined by his low save percentage, which has improved but remains among the lowest in League One at 61.1%, according to FotMob.

The Leicester-born ‘keeper, who helped Doncaster Rovers win League Two last season while on loan in South Yorkshire, was dropped by Schumacher on New Year’s Day after being deemed to be at fault for Bolton’s 1-0 loss at home Mansfield Town whereby the Whites conceded from a fairly weak set-piece.

Sharman-Lowe returned to the Bolton eleven for that recent loss to Port Vale in the EFL Trophy but it now seems as though Wanderers will again have to look to sign another goalkeeper.

Plenty of outgoing business at Bolton

It has been a busy start to the window for Bolton, primarily in terms of outgoings, although they have also brought in young Irish defender Lewis Temple for an undisclosed fee from Shelbourne.

The first outgoing of the winter saw Victor Adeboyejo leave the club for Mansfield, while Will Forrester moved to last season’s League One play-off finalists Leyton Orient.

It has also been reported that Josh Dacres-Cogley is set to move to fellow League One promotion contenders Stockport County, despite also starting alongside Sharman-Lowe against Port Vale.

Another problem for Bolton to solve comes in goal, with the Sharman-Lowe departure complicated by the fact that reports now suggest Tyler Miller is returning to the United States, despite having finally broken into the side as first-choice ahead of the Chelsea loanee.
