Chelsea will continue next season with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen between the sticks, despite asking about AC Milan star Mike Maignan this summer.
According to renowned Sky Sports transfer journalist Kaveh Solhekol, “Robert Sanchez is in the form of his life, and he will fight it out for the No. 1 shirt with Filip Jorgensen next season.
“Chelsea asked AC Milan about the availability of Mike Maignan last month, but no deal materialised, and they are unlikely to sign a goalkeeper this summer.”
Despite making five errors that led to a goal this season in the Premier League, Sanchez put on a brilliant display as Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain to clinch the FIFA Club World Cup.
To be fair to him, his shot-stopping was also phenomenal in the Premier League for most of the season.
However, the decision to persist with Sanchez as their No.1 is baffling and could come back to haunt them next season (View).
Even in his so-called best display for the club against PSG in the Club World Cup final, he was guilty of a schoolboy error that could have gifted the French side a lifeline.
How many more warning signs does the club need?
Chelsea inexplicably sold a superior goalkeeper in Djordje Petrovic and are loaning out one of Europe’s most promising young talents, Mike Penders, all to protect Sanchez.
Why are they protecting a keeper who has become synonymous with giveaways and rash decisions?
Yes, Sanchez pulled off some key saves this season, but five errors leading to goals are a damning statistic.
This number does not even account for the giveaways that only led to turnovers.
Even in the Club World Cup tournament, his distribution was sloppy, and his decision-making was suspect.
Shot-stopping alone does not cut it anymore, especially at a club chasing Champions League football.
Chelsea could end up sabotaging their entire season by treating Sanchez like he is untouchable.
The Blues need an assured, consistent presence between the sticks, not a liability protected by blind faith and poor judgment.
