The Daily Telegraph’s Matt Law has today written a piece about how vital Champions League qualification is for Chelsea, as if we didn’t already know.

His article does make the reality very stark, however. From the finances of missing out on the competition, to the knock on effect on transfers and current players.

Deal for top superstars like Rogers “almost impossible” without CL

One player he mentions by name is Morgan Rogers. The Aston Villa attacker is “constantly linked with Chelsea,” but his “£100m price tag” will make it difficult for any club to sign him, and a deal is “almost impossible” for a team not in the Champions League.

The comparison is made with Joao Pedro, whom the Blues signed last summer. They were able to blow Newcastle out of the water with a bigger bid. If Chelsea weren’t in the Champions League, it feels almost certainly that the Brazilian would be with the Magpies right now.

It’s not just a question of money, it’s also a question of persuading players they can advance their careers at Stamford Bridge.

The reality is that, as Law, says, nobody on that level will be coming to Chelsea without Champions League football. And Champions League football won’t be coming to Chelsea without a win tonight. Who do we face? Of course, it’s Rogers’ Villa…
