Blues looking to close in on automatic progression
Liam Rosenior will take charge of his first Champions League match this evening as Chelsea host Cypriot minnows Pafos in their penultimate league phase match. The Blues’ new boss has impressed in the early days of his career in west London, tasting defeat only at the hands of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, and can further endear himself to the fans if he is able to deliver three sorely needed points this evening.
A top-eight finish is neither likely nor out of the question, though wins would be required both tonight and away at Napoli next week to avoid a two-legged knock-out play-off. Pafos, meanwhile, are not presently in the running to move on but have shown a knack for felling giants in this, their first Champions League campaign. They stunned Villarreal last year to clinch their first win in the competition, and have also nicked draws from Monaco and Olympiacos.
Chelsea legend David Luiz features in the visitors’ squad, though it is not yet clear whether he will feature this evening as he works through an injury.
