Josh Acheampong has been backed to stay at Chelsea and continue his development according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness.

Acheampong is a graduate of Chelsea’s famed Cobham academy and was promoted to the first team squad by Enzo Maresca last season.

The 19-year-old can play at both centre back and right back, and has put in some impressive performances for the Blues this season.

Josh Acheampong backed to remain at Chelsea

Acheampong scored his first Chelsea goal against Nottingham Forest this season, and has rightly earned plaudits for his performances.

However, the 19-year-old hasn’t featured as much as he and fans would have wanted, and Maresca admitted he made a mistake not playing Acheampong in the defeat to Leeds.

Manchester City are believed to be monitoring Acheampong, and the Blues could have an interesting decision to make next summer.

However, former Everton chief executive Wyness has backed Acheampong to remain at Chelsea and continue his development.

“He is following a development track that’s pretty well recognised at that age group,” he told Football Insider.

“I mean, he’s getting some playing time now, and he’s performed well. He is a quality player. And I think he’s going to be staying at Chelsea.

“I don’t see him moving. I think it could be the classic agent, you know, again, placing things in the media. I expect him to stay at Chelsea.

“And although I think he’s going to be a very sought-after talent, he’s a very, very talented young defender with an eye for a goal as well, on certain occasions.

“So I just like him, but I think he’s going to be staying at Chelsea. He’s one of those that I think they don’t want to cash in yet because that would come back to haunt them.”

Chelsea could sign a centre back next summer

Chelsea reportedly could sign another centre back next summer depending on how Levi Colwill returns from his ACL injury.

The Blues have been linked with Nottingham Forest’s Murillo, but they also have talented youngster Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr on loan.

Anselmino and Sarr both made their debut at the Club World Cup, and if they continue to impress on loan for the remainder of the season they could be part of the first team squad next season.
