In a week where Chelsea lacked attacking fluency are firepower once again, one of their top targets looked truly superb in his game.
The Blues scrapped to a 2-2 draw against Brentford, with their struggles to get into gear in attack still evident. Summer additions like Jamie Gittens looked off the pace once again, and manager Enzo Maresca was forced into big half time changes to try and get things on track.

That was on Saturday night. By Sunday night, lots of fans had tuned into La Liga’s big clash of the week, Barcelona against Valencia. There, summer target Fermin Lopez, whom Chelsea had bid for before the deadline, was tearing things up.
He scored twice, and after the game was asked about the links with moves away in the summer, when Chelsea apparently made a low ball, €40m bid for him:
“I have always wanted to be here and I will fight to be here for many years,” Lopez said in quotes picked up by Sky Sports.
“I never doubted being here. There was always speculation over my future at Barcelona. All of that is part of football. I was very calm about it all and I’m very happy to be here.”
His coach, Hansi Flick, also addressed the rumours in his own comments after the game:
“I’m happy that the transfer market is closed! So we can focus on playing football. You can see that Fermín delivered an outstanding performance.”
Chelsea have to hope that the players they did end up signing – Alejandro Garnacho, Facundo Buonanotte, Jamie Gittens and others – all reach a good level soon. It seems like Fermin was there for the taking, if we were willing to put enough money on the line.
