Chelsea forward Sam Kerr says that she is honoured to have taken Australia’s all-time goalscoring record from Tim Cahill.

Cahill scored 50 goals for The Socceroos in a 14-year spell between 2004 and 2018. Kerr went into yesterday’s opening AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 group match against Indonesia one goal behind Cahill but she smashed his record in style by scoring five goals in an 18-0 rout.

When speaking in the official post-match press conference, Kerr said that she was honoured to have taken the all-time goalscoring record for Australia from Cahill.

“Timmy is a legend in Australia so to even be mentioned in the same conversation as him as an honour,” Kerr said. “Every time I score for my country it’s an amazing honour.

“I don’t take any goal for granted and I said after the game that there’s no team that I’d rather do it with. It is an honour to wear the jersey for the Matildas and breaking a record is something that I’ll remember forever.”

Kerr went on to say that breaking the record in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup made the occasion even more special whilst adding that it was a lovely moment for her family given her links to India.

She said “It is special. I definitely thought about my family before the game and how special it would be for them. It is my first time being here in India but seeing the culture and the people when we drive outside of here, everyone here has been so welcoming.

“I know that there are a lot of Indian players out there who follow me so it is special to break the record but it is even more special to do it on Indian soil and in the Asian Cup which is a really important tournament to me.”

Kerr will hope to increase her goal record for Australia when The Commonwealth Bank Matildas take on The Philippines in their second group match in Mumbai on Monday.
