Malo Gusto has come out in strong support of Chelsea’s under-fire manager, Liam Rosenior.
The Chelsea full-back insists the players remain united behind their manager despite a difficult run of results.
Rosenior was appointed in January following the shock dismissal of Enzo Maresca. The Italian’s departure surprised many.
He had delivered both the Club World Cup and Conference League in his debut season at Stamford Bridge, also overseeing memorable victories against Liverpool and Barcelona.
The new manager began promisingly, guiding Chelsea to a comeback win over West Ham and a victory away at Atalanta. However, form has since collapsed.
Defeats to Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle and Everton have left Chelsea on a four-match losing streak heading into the international break.
Gusto, speaking to ESPN, said he struggles to understand the hostility towards his manager.
“I think he [Rosenior] is a top coach, I saw that a lot of people criticised him. Not really [understanding why he is being criticised so much] — I have worked with him a lot since he joined Chelsea.
I think he is a top person first of all, a top manager as well. He is a lot of things for the future, but if he is the Chelsea manager, it is because he has the talent for this.”
Gusto also acknowledged the disruption caused by Maresca’s sudden exit. He believes it has affected the squad’s rhythm.
“It was a bit complicated for us in the middle of the season when Enzo Maresca was sacked. Everyone was surprised to be honest. It is a bit hard [changing system] — a lot of us are young but we have quality to deal with this.”
Despite the turbulence, the Frenchman struck a determined note. “We just have to trust the process and do our best to put Chelsea where it is supposed to be,” he said. “I want to show my best when he puts me on the pitch.”
