Mathis Eboue signed his first professional contract today, and celebrated with an interview on the club’s official website.

The youngster has been tearing it up in our Under-18s team, and is emerging as one of the most exciting talents from the next generation at Cobham.

One of the questions Eboue was asked was about who he looked up to – and he gave a slightly surprising answer given the options he had available to him.

“There are quite a few players I look up to,” Eboue said.

“I like to watch and learn from different wingers. At Chelsea, I look at players like Jamie Gittens. Seeing someone come through and perform at a high level motivates you. When you get the chance to train around players like that, you try to pick up as much as possible.”

Well we didn’t expect that. Gittens showed a few flashes of talent at Borussia Dortmund, but has so far been a bit of a flop at Chelsea. Gittens is a player who needs a lot of work on his game, not someone you’d necessarily look to as a youngster.

To be fair, Eboue also cited Cristiano Ronaldo as another inspiration. That’s more the sort of thing we were expecting.

Eboue looks a really interesting prospect and we’re looking forward to seeing more of him in the years to come.
