Chimy Ávila has expressed regret over his 2022 red-card lunge on Nico Williams, saying, “If I had caught him I would have ruined his career.”

Speaking on Rober Alfonzo’s channel on Kick, the Betis forward admitted he had reacted badly with other players and said the challenge on Williams is one he will always regret.

Ávila was dismissed for a studs-up, knee-high challenge during Osasuna’s meeting with Athletic in 2022. Williams fortunately escaped injury from the incident.

During the interview he was also asked about the Zaragoza goalkeeper’s April altercation with a Huesca player. Saying he knows the keeper through his brother, Ávila described him as “a good person”.

He was far less charitable about the other player involved, Pulido, recalling a previous tackle on him. “He tore my meniscus. He went to hurt me,” Ávila said, adding that he recognises he has not always behaved well on the pitch.
