Three goals in the space of six first-half minutes propelled Chivas to a winning start to the 2022 Clausura against Mazatlán on Sunday.
Scorers: Zaldívar PEN 45′, Torres 45+2′, Vega 45+6
The hosts started brightly at the Estadio Akron, with César Huerta’s header drawing a point-blank save from Mazatlán goalkeeper Nicolás Vikonis.
Los Rojiblancos dominated possession and territory but it took them the full 45 minutes before they made it count.
Ángel Zaldívar dusted himself down after being after being felled by Néstor Vidrio before blasting his spot kick low and hard to the net.
The Flock then doubled their advantage through an exquisite chip by Alan Torres from the edge of the area.
It got even better deep into stoppage time when Alexis Vega curled a delicate free-kick beyond the diving Vikonis.
Chivas managed the game comfortably after the interval to protect the three points and keep a clean sheet on an encouraging night for young manager Marcelo Michel Leaño.
