After a mixed start to the 2025/26 campaign, the Second City side have sprung into life recently.

Four wins in their last six Championship matches has seen Blues jump up the standings, now sitting just one point shy of the play-offs.

Plans for Birmingham’s new 62,000-seat stadium were recently unveiled, with Premier League football ideally to be contested at the ground in the eyes of chairman Tom Wagner.

It was accepted that after arriving back in the second-tier this season, the club may have to bide their time before progressing to the top-flight. However, they may enjoy a direct shot at promotion straight away.

With this in mind, focus has turned to the January transfer window.

Since Knighthead Capital Management bought into Birmingham in 2023, the club have approached transfer markets in an aggressive manner.

Blues made Jay Stansfield League One’s most expensive ever player in 2024 before making a number of high-profile recruits in the 2025 summer window, which saw players such as Tommy Doyle, Kyogo Furuhashi and Demarai Gray all move to St. Andrew’s.

When discussing his side’s plans in the upcoming winter transfer period, Davies admitted that the owners will continue to invest in Birmingham’s squad, as the goal of achieving promotion becomes ever more realistic, whilst also revealing that some players will be moved on to free up space.

“I believe so, I believe there's a combination of both of that,” stated Davies to BirminghamLive. “I don't know the exact figures and the details.

“I think we'll get into that as time goes along, but I think the one thing is for sure that it will be a critical window of opportunity for us to make sure that we come out of that window stronger than we went in.

“We really get into that with even more focus in the coming days and weeks, because obviously it's a critical window for us to get right.

“We feel we've done well in the three windows since I've been here. There's always movement and I think this one's going to be a really important one for us.”

Birmingham City must go all in on the January transfer market

As previously mentioned, many supporters accepted that Birmingham may need some time to acclimatise to being back in the Championship and settle in the division before making a charge for promotion.

This is a view shared by former player Emile Heskey, who believes that Blues shouldn’t walk before they can run and ultimately risk their long-term success.

Whilst that may all be true, the 2025/26 Championship campaign is shaping up to be quite a unique one. In previous years, the teams that have recently been relegated from the Premier League tended to dominate proceedings, leaving little opportunity for the rest of the division to secure promotion.

That hasn’t been the case this season, with Southampton being forced to change their manager and Leicester City boss Marti Cifuentes walking the tightrope after failing to compete towards the top of the table.

This has allowed sides such as Birmingham City to creep into the promotion mix and they must grab the opportunity that presents itself with both hands.

If Blues can give themselves an advantage over the other teams fighting towards the top of the table with a few extra signings, they must make them as it could pay huge dividends come May.
