Sheffield United are confident of signing former Leeds United loanee Joe Rothwell, 30, from Rangers when the winter transfer window opens, according to the Daily Record, which says the Blades are in 'pole position' to land the Rangers No. six just months after his move to Glasgow.
It would follow Chris Wilder bringing England international Patrick Bamford to Bramall Lane in November. The Sheffield United boss had previously been mocked by Bamford and Harry Gray after Daniel Farke’s Leeds sealed automatic promotion last season, and he once called Bamford a 'muppet' during the 2019 promotion race.
Rothwell made 36 appearances for Leeds last season as he helped the Whites win the Championship title. Since Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin in October, he has played only two games and has been left out of the last three Scottish Premiership squads.
Wilder already has Bamford and Jamie Shackleton in his squad, further underlining the Leeds connections at Bramall Lane.
In September, Chris Sutton voiced sympathy for Rothwell, arguing that crowd expectation had affected him and the environment had turned toxic. A move to Sheffield United could give him a reset if it happens.
