Chris Wilder has discussed the future of Gus Hamer, with Sheffield United's star man set to enter the final year of his contract at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United have endured a frustrating final few months to the Championship season, with work ongoing in the background to ensure they are ready for the 2026/27 campaign.

The Blades have already announced that Tom Davies will be leaving the club when his contract expires, with the former Everton man one of several who will depart on a free.

Elsewhere, a lot of the current squad is made up of players on loan, and whilst Sheffield United are keen to re-sign Kalvin Phillips for next season, the expectation is that most will return to their parent clubs.

So, a significant rebuild will take place, and another player who faces an uncertain future is Gus Hamer.

Chris Wilder makes Sheffield United, Gus Hamer admission

The attacking midfielder has been a standout performer for the Yorkshire side since he joined from Coventry in the summer of 2023.

He was particularly good last season, with Hamer named as Player of the Year in the entire division as Sheffield United suffered play-off final heartbreak against Sunderland at Wembley.

Despite his obvious quality, there has been plenty of talk in recent windows that Hamer could leave Bramall Lane, as his contract is set to expire in 2027, with Trabzonspor known to be admirers.

Therefore, the Blades are running the risk of letting their star man leave on a free, and, realistically, the upcoming window represents the last chance to get a decent fee for Hamer - if a new contract isn’t agreed with the Dutchman.

And, speaking to the Sheffield Star, Wilder acknowledged how good Hamer has been, but he admitted that it’s down to the player to show he wants to stay, with talks taking place over a new contract, as he insists they won’t sell on the cheap no matter what happens.

We're talking to them. Gus is in the team, and he's arguably been our best player since I came back last year. He was fantastic. He's had a difficult season, like a lot of the players have this year, but he's an asset.

He's one of the best players in the Championship. But he's got to decide his future as well. But as always, the question will be: ‘Do you want to be part of our new journey?’ And if they don't, then we'll do our best to facilitate that and make things happen. Without getting mugged off by somebody just offering or low-balling us on a price that we don't think is reasonable for us.”

Sheffield United must do all they can to keep Gus Hamer

Obviously, this goes without saying, but Sheffield United must do all they can to keep Hamer, as he really is a fantastic player at this level.

We know the Blades are preparing for another year outside the Premier League, and that is going to be challenging financially, so it may not be possible to keep Hamer on a new and improved contract.

But, purely from a football perspective, the club must do all they can to try and get him to sign a contract. He remains someone who can make a difference in the Championship, and he guarantees goals and assists over the season.

Wilder is well aware of his ability, and he will no doubt stress the importance of trying to keep Hamer, and building a team around his best player.

Yet, if he doesn’t sign a contract, the club are in a difficult situation, and most would agree that selling him would be the best option. It’s clear they need a rebuild, and, even with his contract status, Hamer would be one of the most valuable assets in the squad.

So, his departure may be required to fund the new players that Wilder wants. Either way, a big decision looms for the player and club as Sheffield United prepare for a massive summer window.
