Sheffield United finally picked up their first victory of the season, grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Oxford United. Callum O’Hare’s second-half strike proved decisive as the Blades showed resolve to withstand late pressure from the hosts.

In a cagey first half where chances were at a premium, United came out after the interval with more intent and more quality. Tyrese Campbell, drifting wide to the left, fired in a teasing cross-shot that was hacked clear at the back post. From the resulting corner, Sydie Peck rose highest but could only direct his header straight at goalkeeper Jamie Cumming.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 65th minute. Chiedozie Ogbene, bright throughout, skipped past Jack Currie down the right and squared low into the box. O’Hare arrived in space and calmly slotted home to spark jubilant celebrations in front of the travelling supporters. Oxford appealed that the ball had gone out of play before Ogbene’s cutback, but the officials waved play on.

Desperate for an equaliser, Oxford introduced fresh legs across the pitch. Substitute Greg Leigh almost made an instant impact, striking the post after a corner was recycled, while Sam Long glanced a Stanley Mills cross wide at the near post deep into stoppage time.

Chris Wilder’s men, however, stood firm under intense pressure. With Japhet Tanganga, Mark McGuinness and Ben Mee leading the back three, the Blades repelled everything thrown at them to secure a vital three points.

After the match, Wilder spoke to SUTV and expressed his delight at both the result and his players’ response to a difficult run.

“It felt great for the players and the supporters. It has been a tough period for everybody. I thought the second-half performance was more like us, more composed, more calm, more belief. I think you’ve got to accept that when you’re on a losing streak it isn’t going to be free flowing. But the players left everything out there.”

The Blades boss highlighted the improvement in physical commitment: “We went from bottom of the league for duels to top of the league in one performance. They are committed, they are together, and we will try and find a way of winning games.”

Wilder also praised the travelling support, who filled out the away end at the Kassam Stadium: “The supporters never stopped all game, especially the second half. It’s our job to give them something to shout about and we certainly did that.”

Blades Hopeful That Trio Are Available For Southampton Clash

Wilder confirmed that Tom Davies and Danny Ings are expected to be available for Tuesday’s home match against Southampton, adding experience and composure to the squad. However, Tahith Chong’s involvement remains uncertain after his knee “locked up” during the warm-up and was replaced by Djibril Soumare.

The win, albeit a scrappy one, gives Sheffield United a much-needed lift as they seek to climb away from the bottom of the table. With Southampton visiting Bramall Lane next, Wilder will hope this battling performance can mark the turning point in his side’s season.
