The Blades replaced beloved manager Chris Wilder after last season's play-off final defeat to Sunderland, but the appointment of Selles has been nothing short of a disaster, which culminated in a 5-0 loss to Ipswich Town on Friday.

Even before reports emerged of his sacking, the Sheffield Star had revealed that the Steel City club had made an approach to bring the man they sacked mere months ago back to the club, after Friday's humiliation in Suffolk.

Despite reports from Alan Nixon via his Patreon page suggesting that Wilder might face competition for the job, as former West Brom manager Tony Mowbray is also 'on standby', Jason Burt of The Telegraph has now revealed that the former United boss' return is imminent.

Now the Blades are set to re-appoint the man they sacked just months ago, it's fair to say they've been somewhat left with egg on their face, after the experiment with Selles turned out to be a resounding failure.

Having failed to win all five of their opening matches in the Championship, and falling to defeat in the first round of the EFL Cup, the former Hull boss' woes were compounded by a 5-0 loss to Ipswich on Friday evening.

Supporters had already turned on Selles after this shocking start to the campaign, and the thumping in Suffolk just hammered home that change was needed if United want to be anywhere near the top of the Championship table come May.

It's a hugely disappointing end to a new era that never really got started in the first place at Bramall Lane, and the club are now set to return to familiar pastures, by reappointing beloved boss Wilder for the third time.
