Monday’s Yorkshire Derby between the Championship’s top two sees Chris Wilder and Daniel Farke face each other for an eighth time as managers.
It will be the second time the pair have managed against each other as Sheffield United and Leeds United managers. With the first six being matches between the Blades and Norwich City.
But how has Chris Wilder got on against Daniel Farke in the seven previous encounters?
Chris Wilder has won four of the seven games he has managed against Daniel Farke. With three of these four wins ending 2-1.
Wilder’s first win against Farke came at Carrow Road. With the Blades getting an early lead from striker, James Wilson on the sixth minute. The goal, Wilson’s only one for the Blades, started with a corner from John Fleck. The ball was headed into the air by Norwich’s Nelson Oliveira, then headed down by Chris Basham falling to the feet of Wilson. With his left foot his shot went through a crowd of players and ending up in the bottom corner.
On the 58th minute Wilson was substituted for Clayton Donaldson and ten minutes later Donaldson doubled the Blades’ lead. With the ball coming down just inside Norwich’s half, Donaldson won it from the Norwich defender. Before dribbling inside from the left and beating Angus Gunn.
Two minutes later, Norwich got a goal back through Ivo Pinto. A corner from Mario Vrancic found Pinto who headed the ball upwards beating defenders and Simon Moore as it landed in the net. Although, it wouldn’t be enough and the Blades took the three points back to Yorkshire.
The Blades took another early lead from a corner as Oliver Norwood put the ball in from the right. His fast drilled cross found John Egan at the far post, with the Blades defender heading across goal. The ball was headed seemingly off the line only for the goal to be given by goal line technology.
Norwich responded with an equaliser on the 26th minute with Teemu Pukki playing the ball to Onel Hernandez in the box. He got the ball across the box where Jordon Rhodes did his best Billy Sharp impression with a first-time finish in front of the Kop.
The Blades won the game in the 93rd minute when Chris Basham lifted the ball where the ball was tapped into the path of Sharp who headed gently into the net. With the Blades captain sending the Kop wild. As well as inspiring a full pitch sprint from Dean Henderson who joined his teammates in the celebrations.
The first Premier League tie between Chris Wilder and Daniel Farke. The Blades managed to come from behind to secure a tight victory.
Alexander Tettey’s opener on the 27th minute. A Norwich corner saw the ball come into the box where Zimmerman won a duel to allow the ball to fall to Tettey. The midfielder hit the ball with his left foot swinging his leg high as his shot sailed past Dean Henderson through a crowd.
The Blades had to wait until the second-half to respond. The move started from a George Baldock throw to John Lundstram. Lundstram with a one touch pass sent Baldock running down the right wing crossing the ball into the centre of the box. Perfectly finding Enda Stevens whose free header saw the Blades equalise on the 49th minute.
Three minutes later, a ball into the box again from the right was intercepted by Mario Vrancic. Although, the Norwich midfielder couldn’t keep the ball under control as Baldock tackled him. Before running to just outside the box and with his back to goal decoyed, turned and fired the ball into the net from distance. Brilliant quick-thinking from Starman to earn the Blades three points.
Wilder’s most recent win against Farke came just before lockdown. On the 36th minute, the Blades secured the winner from Billy Sharp. After, a sensational ball from Oliver Norwood from the right-hand side of the pitch halfway into Norwich’s half found Sharp who from a diving header fired the ball past Tim Krul.
The Blades were kept in the game by goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s second-half double save after Norwich’s corner. With Henderson quickly leaping from his left to his right.
The first match between Chris Wilder and Daniel Farke saw Farke walk away with the victory.
Norwich’s winner on the 23rd minute came from Yanic Wildschut. A simple pass forward into the box from James Maddison which Wildschut ran onto and was finished easily by the Suriname international.
The reverse fixture to Monday’s match. The Blades headed to Elland Road on a difficult day as the first match after the tragic passing of George Baldock.
From a match perspective, the Blades gave Leeds far too much respect. Yes, they are one of the best sides in the division. But changing a winning formula and playing more defensively fed right into Leeds’ ability to break teams down.
Goals from Pascal Struijk (69th minute) and Mateo Joseph (90th minute) saw the Blades head back to South Yorkshire empty handed. Hopefully, at Bramall Lane, the Blades can show what we can do when we’re at our best.
The fourth game between the two managers is the only draw they’ve played out to date. Strangely, it has made Wilder’s record against Farke symmetrical. LWWDWWL.
The Blades were rescued by Billy Sharp after Norwich took the lead twice through Onel Hernandez (11th minute) and Teemu Pukki (56th minute) respectively.
The Blades captain’s first goal on the fourth minute of added time in the first-half. A penalty fired into the top right-corner led Sharp to complete his infamous sock celebration.
His second goal, a cross from the right from Mark Duffy found Sharp in the middle of the box. With him scoring a header past Tim Krul to share the points between the two eventual automatic promotion winners.
Currently, Chris Wilder has the edge on Farke and Monday’s game is important for his personal record as well as the promotion battle. Wilder completed the double over Farke in the 2019/20 season but the Leeds boss has yet to do the same over Wilder.
The most important thing is that Wilder sticks to his guns and trust his tactics. Without the points deduction, have collected the same amount. So, there is no reason to fear Leeds. If the Blades go out at their best and still lose, at least they’ve left it all out there. Instead of conceding defeat playing conservatively and differently.
